Louis Arthur: Mating Suggestions

Those looking to maximize their breeding and racing dollars will want to consider the advice of the man who recommended the breedings that produced Champions Ashado, Kona Gold and Grade 1 winners and successful sires Yes It's True and More Than Ready.  His astute pedigree reading resulted in him recommending which types of mares would bring success to the then unproven and lightly regarded stallion, Distorted Humor.  His recommendations led to the young stallion to sire Kentucky Derby winner Funny Cide in his first crop.  Distorted Humor stood for $227,000 in 2007.  Additionally, his early recommendations supported the young stallions Officer, Yes It's True and Exchange Rate, resulting in them all standing for much more than their original stud fees.  This track record and more is why we chose Les Brinsfield to take an indepth look at Louis Arthur's pedigree and give his recommendations on how to bring out the best in his qualify pedigree.

The first place to begin to assess pedigree compatibility between a mare and stallion is with the stallion's distaff side. The reason for this is best expressed in the oft quoted edict attributed to Olin Gentry, "Return to the sire the best blood of his dam, preferably in the same generation."

This theory, however, was originally put forth by C. Bruce Lowe, best known for organizing the descent of mares into Family numbers. Bruce Lowe wrote in his book, Breeding Racehorses by the Figure System: How To Breed Great Stake Horses (and Sires) by Returning Your Stallion The Best Strains of his Dam:

"This is one of the most important rules to observe. It has been pretty generally recognized amongst stud masters that the best blood in the sire should be nicked; but I do not know of any writer who has distinctly laid it down as a general law that the best blood of the stallion's dam should be nicked in preference to his sire's side of pedigree table."
