Class “He did everything right, right from the beginning…To this day, I still think he is as good as any horse Mr. Adam ever had.” ~ Ernest Retamoza, Jr., Farm Manager and trainer for Don Adam’s Courtland Farm & TAC Holdings, owner/breeder of 2004/2005 Breeders’ Cup placed mare and Grade 1 winner, Film Maker. At 2, while training for his racing debut, Louis Arthur suffered a nearly career ending injury – a torn right hind suspensory with an avulsion fracture of the right hock. Amazingly, not only did he recover to make it to the races at all, he won – 5 races, at top level tracks and showed blistering early speed! Included among the quality horses he defeated are black-type winners TEMPERENCE TIME (10 wins, $437,598, Remington Derby-G3, etc.), GOLD BANDIT (16 wins, $364,995), WINGS OF JONES (19 wins, $361,682), PATUXENT RIVER (4 wins, $101,075) and black-type placed Shimmering Bronze (9 wins, $196,893). At age 6, he was Relaunch’s leading current runner by percentage of wins to starts (60%) and percentage in the money (100%). He was 3rd (tied) by number of wins and 8th (ahead of WITH ANTICIPATION (G1)) by money earned. Heart, Versatility and Speed On Halloween, 2002 at Louisiana Downs, making his first start in six months, sprinted to an early lead, on the track labeled good, and battled in the stretch to regain his lead to win by 2 1/2 lengths as the even money favorite. Nine days later he came back at Louisiana Downs, this time on a fast track, again wiring the race to a second 2 1/2 length victory. After a nearly three month layoff, Louis Arthur returned to racing in March, 2003 at Oaklawn Park, where he overcame a bad start to make his way through the field to be up for second. A month later, he broke in the middle of the pack, made a move four wide on the turn, and wore down the leader to win by half length at the wire as the heavy favorite. In mid-April at Oaklawn Park, after finishing second in his previous race as the beaten even money favorite, Louis Arthur broke well, vied for the early lead between horses, rated as asked to the top of the stretch, opened up daylight through the stretch under a hand ride and maintained his daylight lead under steady urging to win by 2 ˝ lengths as the heavy favorite. On April 26, 2003, at Lone Star Park, after being shoved a lane over to the middle of the track at the break, Louis Arthur used his speed to cut across the field to tuck up on the rail, just a head behind leader Servant King. Together they set an opening quarter fraction of :22.30, a half of :45.03 and a respectable :57.45 for five furlongs at Lone Star Park. In the stretch, after a bitter duel that saw Louis Arthur literally bouncing off the rail, when he could have easily given up after such a rough trip, this horse dug in, found more, and pulled ahead to a half-length victory as the even money favorite. Louis Arthur set or pressed the early pace in many of his races.
